Which is better: group or 1:1 breathwork sessions?
In short: neither is better but one might suit your needs more than the other.
You keep hearing the words ‘amazing’ and ‘mind-blowing’ being uttered in the same sentence as this thing called conscious connected breathwork and you know you need to try this thing out for yourself. The thing is: you’re not sure whether you should sign up for a group or 1:1 session. Like, what’s the difference between 1:1 and group breathwork and is one better than the other? Let me clear up any confusion about group versus 1:1 breathwork sessions in this blog post.
But first, what is conscious connected breatwork?
In short, conscious connected breathwork is a bold, energising and empowering practice that brings you back to your body, your energy and your sense of self. It’s known as a a tranformational breathwork practice, which means that it enables you to access deeper or expanded states of consciousness. This is possible because of the breathing pattern used: breathing in a circular, connected fashion. The whole experience is guided by a trained breathwork facilitator and supported by music and touch (for in-person sessions). By using this simple yet powerful technique, you are able to come into presence with your essential self, reconnect with the pulse of your own vitality and return to your own skin.
What happens in a conscious connected breathwork session?
You’ll go on a journey into your inner world, where you can access deeper states of consciousness to create profound shifts in your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. The format for both group and 1:1 sessions in generally the same, with some small differences.
First, I open the space and chat through the theme for the session (groups) or what you specifically want to explore in the session (1:1s). I may invite you to pull a card from an oracle deck or do some journalling.
Then I explain and model the technique we’ll be using and you can ask any questions.
After that, it’s time to get comfy and settle into your breathing nest (yes, you’ll be lying down!).
Then I guide you in some practices to lay the foundations for the journey you’ll go on: grounding breathing techniques, body awareness techniques, meditations, visualisations, resourcing practices. I also invite you to set an intention for the practice, which is like a North Star that can guide where you go.
After this, I guide you in the conscious connected breathwork practice, guided by a specially-curated playlist. I use supportive touch throughout when needed and remind you of the technique. I also weave in questions of inquiry about the theme or intention at specific points in the journey so you can explore these with the intelligence of your body. The journey generally takes the form of a wave – moving ever closer towards a peak, where I’ll invite you to breathe with more intention and more deeply, before slowing things down again after the peak.
After the peak, we slow things down and start the grounding process, which continues with a period of silence then guided movement and music to bring you back to the space.
Once you’re fully back, there is time for sharing and questions. I also offer tips about how to integrate breathwork into your daily life.
How will you walk away feeling after conscious connected breathwork session?
The beauty of conscious connected breathwork is that it meets you where you are and takes you exactly where you need to go in the moment. So, how you feel and what you experience in a session is as unique as you are. That said, it’s common to feel any of the following after a session:
A blissful grounded calmness: like a delicious nervous system reset.
Vibrant & alive: connected to your life-force energy.
Lighter & more free: less emotional clutter, more internal space.
Mentally sharp: with ideas and insights flowing in effortlessly.
Empowered: reconnected with your strongest, most essential self.
Embodied: connected to the wisdom & power of your physical body.
So which is better: 1:1 or group breathwork sessions?
To be clear, both groups and 1:1 breathwork sessions can be extremely powerful and transformative. Personally, I have had some of my most life-changing sessions in groups as well as 1:1s. I’ve also had extremely profound sessions both online and in-person (hence why I offer both). However, one of the two may suit you better depending on your circumstances and intentions for the session.
Group breathwork sessions are great for:
Breathing in community with others. Often we chat and have tea after so it can be a social thing too!
Trying out breathwork for the first time at a lower price point.
Benefitting from sharing and hearing shares in the circle after the breathe.
When you are open to exploring various themes with the breath that the facilitator defines.
Those who like soaking up others’ energy and being part of a group.
1:1 breathwork sessions are great for:
Getting the undivided attention of the facilitator.
To receive more touch to encourage optimal breathing and support your journey throughout the session (in-person sessions only).
Exploring a specific theme that you are moving through at the moment (e.g. a specific question, or a specific emotion e.g. anger).
Those who can’t make group session timings (that tend to be evenings) and prefer daytime slots.
Those who tend to feel nervous and anxious in a group situation and thrive in 1:1 environments.
Those who have a specific health issue that requires more intensive support and modifications from a facilitator.
Having a session totally tailored to you, going at your pace and modified to meet your needs in the moment.
Getting the full therapeutic benefit of breathwork (many people call breathwork ‘therapy without the talking’) as we have the time and space to go deeper.
No matter whether you come to a group session or a 1:1 session, this work is for anyone ready to reclaim space for themselves. We’re all rushing through life, hoping something will slow us down, but the truth is, life just won’t give us that break! Breathwork is a way to stop, reset and come back to ourselves, not by resting but by feeling: fully, frankly and fiercely. Perhaps you’re navigating overwhelm, burnout or emotional disconnection (I’ve been there too). Or maybe you’re ready to stop the cycle of ‘just coping’ and start living with more clarity, presence and purpose. Whatever draws you to this work, you will feel the ripple effect of its impact across many areas of your life.
